As I wrote in my blog last night, there are LOTS of squirrels at Manatee Hammock Campground. I almost always have the same camping space, #137, so I’m guessing since I have always brought lots of nuts for the squirrels they remember me. After I set up camp they come say hi and welcome me back. At least I like to think they do. I told them I didn’t bring nuts this time and they kept looking for them. There are usually about a dozen of them at any given time in my campsite.
This morning I thought, I don’t have any nuts, but I do have bread and peanut butter. I could try feeding them pieces of peanut butter sandwiches. So I made several sandwiches and put them on the picnic table. I broke one sandwich up and threw it on the ground in several locations. Seems most of the squirrels picked them up and ate them, a few sniffed and came to me looking for something else. I bet it’s the same ones that didn’t like the goldfish crackers last time. After I finished breaking up the next to last sandwich, I turned around to get the last one and saw a squirrel on the picnic table eating it. I think this is now one of my favorite pictures.
I got some other pictures of the squirrels eating the sandwiches.
This afternoon when I was sitting outside about 8 squirrels came to visit. I gave them a few slices of bread, torn in pieces. Then I thought I wonder if they would eat pretzels. Some did, others were being more selective.
