Savannah, Georgia and Jekell Island, Georgia

Tuesday night Cindy and I were talking about what to do on Wednesday since she took the day off so we could do something together.  We decided that since Savannah is only two hours away that we would go to Savannah and eat lunch at Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House Restaurant, they are open from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  I was there about 6 or 7 years ago and it was really great food, served family style.  The tables seat 10 people and they take the people in line and seat them together.  It’s a great way to meet people, and you feel like you are sitting in someones kitchen eating homemade food.

We got to Mrs. Wilkes at 10:15 a.m. and the line was down the street and around the corner already, and it didn’t open until 11:00.  While we were in line, I remembered that my friend Dyanne is the city clerk in Savannah, so I called her office. She was in a meeting and she called me back shortly.  I told her I am in line at Mrs. Wilkes, and she said she is taking her staff there for lunch.  What a coincidence???  She came by about noon, and Cindy and I joined her and her staff for lunch.  It was great fun catching up on life, and meeting new people.  Of course, we stuffed ourselves with the great southern comfort foods.  The fried chicken was the best I have ever had!!!  I can’t even list all the foods we ate, but some of it was bar b que chicken, macaroni and cheese, lima beans, meat loaf, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, squash, collard greens, corn bread stuffing, blackeyed peas, rice, sausage with rice, and much more.  Even taking a little of many things filled the plate.  For dessert we were served a choice of banana pudding or a fruit cobbler.

After we ate, we said goodbye to Dyanne and her staff. Cindy and I decided to walk down to the riverfront which was a little more than 4 blocks.  We enjoyed looking at the old buildings, browsing through antique shops, and looking at the azaleas that were in full bloom in so many colors.  IMG_8785

IMG_8782We made it back to the van after our long walk, and we were glad we didn’t have to walk much further. Our feet let us know they were not happy we did so much walking. The weather was perfect for our outing. Here is an album of Photos I took.

Driving back towards Yulee, Cindy decided to take Highway 17 instead of the Interstate since it would be more scenic. When we got a ways south of Savannah, we passed by Jekell Island. It was about 5:30 p.m. and we knew the shops would be closed, but we thought it would be nice to explore it anyway.  I was there probably about 6 or 7 years ago. Boy has the island changed. There are many more hotels, soccer fields, stores and shopping villages are being constructed now, there is a conference center, housing developments, etc.  It’s going to be it’s own city.  We did enjoy driving around the island. Many of the roads are still along undeveloped land and they wind in long loops around the island.  It started raining as we were finishing our drive through the island.

On one of the back roads closer to Florida, we saw an antique shop. The sign out front said “we sell dead peoples things.”  We got a laugh from reading the sign.  I don’t remember ever seeing those words on a sign before at a shop. We also saw a store of some kind that had a large cement cow wearing a straw hat.

I will be staying with Cindy for several more days, then Dyanne wants me to come to Savannah for a few days to visit with her before I head to Bluffton, SC to see my friend there.
