Fort Worth Japanese Garden

Saturday, October 22, 2011

Sue, Pat, and I went to Glass House in Fort Worth this morning and we got to see several people we know, some of which we have not seen in a long time… it was great to catch up on life.  We then went to Zeke’s Fish and Chips for lunch and had great fried fish, hushpuppies, etc. We were able to sit outside in their garden area and enjoy our meal, fresh air, and have a great time talking.

After we left Zeke’s, we were driving down Camp Bowie Blvd. and saw The Sweet Shop, which is a store that makes and sells the most delicious chocolate candies. I shopped there for many years when I lived in Texas and every time I visit Fort Worth Sue, Pat, Helen or I stop at The Sweet Shop, however, it seems they are always in a different location. We just happened to see the store while we were driving, we knew it was somewhere in the area but didn’t know exactly where.

Fort Worth Japanese Garden is having their fall festival this weekend, so we went and thought that we could get some fresh air, and also walk off our lunch. Many, many, years ago, I was a docent at the Fort Worth Japanese Gardens, I’m guessing maybe 25 or 30 years ago. I volunteered there for several years and really enjoyed not only learning about the various plants and meanings behind some of the features in the garden, but telling others about it too. There are lots of Koi, they will just about climb over each other to get some of the pellet food that people feed them. I was told years ago, that every now and then they change out some of the fish so that their colors stay bright and pure.

It was a beautiful day with temperatures about 80 degrees. We watched some of the Japanese dancing, walked through the craft area which was pretty small, and just looked at the plants, trees, etc. Being in the Japanese Garden is almost always a peaceful experience. We are always amazed at how the stone area in an area is raked perfectly with no footprints. We have no idea how this is accomplished, but it must take lots of practice and patience.

We also walked through part of the Botanical Garden and building. They had a salt water aquarium and I love watching the clown fish.

On the way back to Sue’s house we stopped at Panera Bread and got a loaf of rye bread, thick sliced… it was so good… I had to eat a slice on the drive back!!!
