Bluffton, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia

I arrived at my friend Milan’s house in  Del Webb’s Sun City, Bluffton, South Carolina, on Thursday afternoon.  Milan’s sister Jane and her husband Griff are visiting from their home in Michigan.  We went for a  two mile walk and then ate potato chips while dinner cooked.

On Friday morning, we decided to drive to Savannah to have lunch at Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room.  Savannah is about a 30 minute drive from Bluffton. Milan took back roads rather than the Interstate so it was a nice relaxing drive.  Of course, we ate so much at lunch, the food at Mrs. Wilkes is excellent. After we ate, we decided to walk around Savannah,  we headed towards the cemetary. It was absolutely the most interesting cemetary I have been in.  I forgot to bring my camera, however, Milan’s sister Jane brought hers so I can post a few photos in an album.  Many of the gravestones were worn so much that it was difficult to read. Others we could make out what they said. One of the things we noticed that many of the headstones besides the year they were born and died, had the age in years and months. Such as 9 years and 10 months, or 29 years and 4 months.  One headstone instead of saying a lady died, it said she fell asleep on this date, whatever the date was.

Here is an album of Photos I took.

Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia, established in 1733, so it was not unusual to see so many early dated headstones. There were many graves of generals, and other officers of the wars.  Many gravestones had dates in the 1700s and early 1800s.  There were historical plaques telling stories about some of the officers. It seems that many early settlers came from Scotland and England.  We spent quite a bit of time reading headstones and stories.

There are so many interesting old historical buildings in downtown Savannah. The architecture is absolutely beautiful. So many of the buildings had historical markers showing they were built in the early 1800s. We then walked back many blocks to Milan’s truck and just as we got there it rained for about a minute or two, then stopped.

It was a fun day and nice to be together with friends. I am not sure of my next exploration.  I have to look at the map and decide whether I want to drive about 2 hours to Charleston, or head towards Knoxville.  I’m sure either way it will be a nice adventure.

I edit a website associated with a newspaper near Ludowici, GA, where you recently donated to three agencies. I’m asking for permission to use a photo of you from your Picasa site. The photo would accompany a story we did about the donation. The print version did not use a photo. However, I’d like to use one showing you after the blimp ride. You appear to be walking away from the blimp as the crew secures it.
